Objective

By the end of this lesson, students will be able to use a sand tray to creatively express a favorite memory, share who they are, and illustrate their dreams. This activity will help enhance their storytelling skills, boost their imagination, and encourage self-reflection.

Materials and Prep

  • 1 sand tray (or a shallow container filled with sand)
  • Assorted small objects (toys, figures, stones, etc.) that can represent different elements of their stories
  • A comfortable space for storytelling
  • Optional: A timer for timed activities (if desired)
  • Knowledge of basic storytelling elements (beginning, middle, end)

Activities

  • Story Creation: Students will choose a favorite memory and create a scene in the sand tray using the small objects. They will then narrate the story behind the scene they created, focusing on the emotions and details of that memory.

  • Who Am I? In this activity, students will use the sand tray to represent who they are. They can use objects that symbolize their interests, hobbies, and personality traits. After creating their scene, they will share with the class what each object represents.

  • Dreams in the Sand: Students will create a representation of their dreams using the sand tray. They can use different objects to symbolize their goals and aspirations. Once their scene is complete, they will explain how they envision achieving their dreams.

  • Reflection Time: After sharing their stories, students will take a moment to reflect on what they learned about themselves and their peers. They can write down or share one thing they found surprising about their own stories or those of others.
