Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to successfully bake a batch of delicious cookies from scratch. They will learn about the ingredients, the baking process, and how to measure and mix them properly, all while having fun in the kitchen!

Materials and Prep

  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1 cup brown sugar
  • 1 cup butter (softened)
  • 2 eggs
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 2 cups chocolate chips (or any preferred add-ins)
  • Baking sheet
  • Parchment paper (optional)
  • Mixing bowl
  • Measuring cups and spoons
  • Wooden spoon or spatula
  • Oven

Before starting, make sure the oven is preheated to 350°F (175°C). Also, wash your hands and wear an apron to keep your clothes clean!

Activities

  • Ingredient Exploration:

Begin by gathering all the ingredients. Discuss each ingredient's role in the cookie-making process. For example, "Sugar makes our cookies sweet, while flour gives them structure!"

  • Measuring Fun:

Practice measuring each ingredient accurately. Use measuring cups and spoons, and say, "Look how precise we need to be! Baking is like a science experiment!"

  • Mixing It Up:

Combine the ingredients in a mixing bowl. Encourage the student to mix well and say, "Mixing is where the magic happens! We’re turning these ingredients into cookie dough!"

  • Shaping Cookies:

Use a spoon to scoop the dough onto the baking sheet. Discuss different shapes they could make, like circles or fun blobs, and say, "Every cookie can be unique, just like us!"

  • Baking Time:

Place the baking sheet in the oven (with adult supervision) and set a timer. While waiting, talk about the baking process and say, "Look how the cookies change in the oven! It’s like they’re having a little dance party!"

  • Taste Test:

Once the cookies are baked and cooled, it’s time for a taste test! Ask the student how they feel about their creation and say, "This is the best part! We get to enjoy our hard work!"

Talking Points

  • "Why do you think we need to measure our ingredients carefully?"
  • "What do you think will happen if we forget the baking soda?"
  • "How do you think the cookies will change when we bake them?"
  • "Can you guess how many cookies we will make with this dough?"
  • "What’s your favorite cookie shape? Let's make some!"
  • "How do you feel about helping in the kitchen? It’s a fun way to learn!"
  • "What do you think makes a cookie taste the best?"
  • "Are you excited to share these cookies with family or friends?"
