Objective

By the end of this lesson, Rylee will have a foundational understanding of interior design principles and will create a mood board that reflects her unique style and vision for a room in her home.

Materials and Prep

  • Paper or a digital platform for the mood board
  • Pens, markers, or colored pencils
  • Magazines or printouts of interior design images
  • Scissors and glue (if using paper)
  • Access to a computer or tablet for research (optional)

Before the lesson, gather various magazines or printouts that showcase different interior design styles. Familiarize yourself with basic design principles such as color theory, balance, and space planning.

Activities

  • Introduction to Interior Design:

Start with a brief discussion about what interior design is and its importance in creating functional and aesthetically pleasing spaces. Explore different styles, such as modern, rustic, and eclectic.

  • Explore Color Theory:

Discuss how colors affect mood and space. Rylee can create a color wheel and experiment with different color combinations that she might want to use in her designs.

  • Create a Mood Board:

Using the collected images, Rylee will design a mood board that represents a room she would like to design. Encourage her to think about colors, textures, and furniture styles that resonate with her vision.

  • Present and Discuss:

Have Rylee present her mood board and explain her design choices. This will help her articulate her ideas and receive feedback.

Talking Points

  • "Interior design is all about making spaces feel comfortable and beautiful. What do you think makes a space feel inviting?"
  • "Colors can really change how we feel in a room. For example, blue can be calming, while yellow can be energizing. What colors do you love?"
  • "Balance in design means creating a sense of harmony. If one side of a room is heavy with furniture, how can we balance it out?"
  • "Textures add depth to a design. Think about how different materials like wood, fabric, and metal can work together. What textures do you like?"
  • "Creating a mood board helps you visualize your ideas. It’s like a sneak peek into your dream room! What would you want to include?"
  • "Don’t be afraid to mix styles! Eclectic designs can be really fun. What styles do you think would go well together?"
  • "When you present your ideas, it’s a chance to share your creativity. How do you feel about showing your work to others?"
