Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to introduce themselves and others, use basic greetings, and understand simple phrases related to personal information, such as name, age, and where they live. This will help build confidence in speaking English and make social interactions easier.

Materials and Prep

  • New American Streamline, Streamline Unit 1 textbook (or any printed material related to Unit 1)
  • Whiteboard and markers (or paper and pens)
  • Flashcards with common greetings and phrases
  • Audio recordings of greetings (if available)
  • Access to a mirror for practice

Before the lesson, review the key vocabulary and phrases from Unit 1. Familiarize yourself with any audio recordings you plan to use.

Activities

  • Greeting Role-Play:

Have the student practice different greetings with you. Use flashcards to prompt them with different scenarios (e.g., meeting someone for the first time, greeting a friend). Encourage them to use the phrases they learned in Unit 1.

  • Self-Introduction Circle:

Ask the student to introduce themselves in front of a mirror. They should say their name, age, and where they live. This will help them practice speaking clearly and confidently. You can take turns introducing yourselves.

  • Listening and Repeating:

Play audio recordings of greetings and phrases. Have the student listen and repeat after each phrase. This will help them with pronunciation and intonation.

  • Greeting Bingo:

Create a Bingo card filled with different greetings and phrases from Unit 1. As you call out the phrases, the student can mark them on their card. This adds a fun game element to the lesson!

Talking Points

  • "Let's start by learning how to say 'Hello!' in different ways. Can you think of some other greetings?"
  • "When you introduce yourself, it's important to say your name clearly. Can you practice saying, 'My name is [Your Name]'?"
  • "How do you feel when someone greets you? It's nice to feel welcomed, right?"
  • "Remember, using polite phrases like 'Nice to meet you' makes a good impression!"
  • "Practicing in front of a mirror can help you see how you look when you speak. Let’s try it together!"
  • "Listening is just as important as speaking. Let's listen carefully to the greetings and repeat them!"
  • "Games can make learning fun! Are you ready for some Bingo with greetings?"
