Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to understand basic baking concepts, such as measuring ingredients, mixing, and the importance of following a recipe. They will also have created a simple baked treat to enjoy!

Materials and Prep

  • 1 cup of flour
  • 1/2 cup of sugar
  • 1/2 cup of butter (softened)
  • 1 egg
  • 1/2 teaspoon of baking powder
  • Mixing bowl
  • Measuring cups and spoons
  • Wooden spoon or spatula
  • Baking tray
  • Oven (for adult use only)

Before starting the lesson, make sure to set up a safe baking area and have all ingredients and tools ready. Explain to the student that baking is fun and we will make something yummy together!

Activities

  • Measuring Ingredients:

Show the student how to measure each ingredient using the measuring cups and spoons. Let them help pour the flour and sugar into the bowl. This helps them learn about quantities and numbers!

  • Mixing:

Once all ingredients are in the bowl, let the student use the wooden spoon to mix everything together. Encourage them to stir in circles and make sure everything is combined well!

  • Shaping the Dough:

Help the student shape the dough into small balls or use cookie cutters to create fun shapes. This activity enhances their fine motor skills and creativity!

  • Baking Time:

Once the treats are shaped, place them on the baking tray and put them in the oven (with adult supervision). While they bake, talk about how heat makes the treats change and become yummy!

  • Tasting:

After baking, let the treats cool down and then enjoy tasting them together! Ask the student what they think about their creation.

Talking Points

  • "Look at the flour! It's like snow! We use it to make our treats fluffy."
  • "Can you help me count the cups of sugar? One... two... that's right!"
  • "Mixing is like a dance! Let's stir and make music with our spoon!"
  • "Wow! Look how the dough changes when we bake it! It gets puffy and golden!"
  • "Yay! We made something yummy! How does it taste? Is it sweet or crunchy?"
