By the end of this lesson, the student will learn how to make elderberry syrup from scratch, understanding the health benefits of elderberries and the steps involved in the syrup-making process.

Materials and Prep

  • Fresh or dried elderberries
  • Water
  • Honey or sugar (for sweetening)
  • Pot for boiling
  • Strainer or cheesecloth
  • Glass jar or bottle for storage

Before starting, make sure to wash your hands and gather all materials in one place. Familiarize yourself with elderberries and their health benefits, as well as the importance of proper measurements and cooking times.

Activities

  • Research Elderberries:

Start by researching elderberries. Learn about their nutritional benefits, traditional uses, and why they are popular in herbal medicine. Create a fun poster or a digital presentation to summarize your findings.

  • Syrup Making Process:

Follow the step-by-step process to make elderberry syrup. Measure out the elderberries and water, then bring them to a boil. Simmer for about 30 minutes, then strain the mixture and add honey or sugar to taste.

  • Label Your Syrup:

Once your syrup is made, design a label for your jar or bottle. Include the date, ingredients, and a fun name for your syrup. This will help you remember when it was made and make it look professional!

  • Tasting Party:

Invite family members to a tasting party. Prepare small samples of your elderberry syrup, and discuss its flavor and potential uses (like in teas or on pancakes). This will make the experience more interactive and fun!
