Objective

By the end of this lesson, Iris will be able to understand basic math concepts such as addition and measurement while enjoying the art of baking. She will create a simple recipe that combines her interests in math and science, resulting in a delicious treat!

Materials and Prep

  • 1 cup of flour
  • 1/2 cup of sugar
  • 1/2 cup of butter (softened)
  • 1 egg
  • 1 teaspoon of baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract
  • Mixing bowl
  • Measuring cups and spoons
  • Whisk or spoon for mixing
  • Baking tray
  • Oven (with adult supervision)

Before the lesson, make sure that the oven is preheated to 350°F (175°C), and all ingredients are ready to use. Discuss safety in the kitchen with Iris, especially around the oven.

Activities

  • Measuring Ingredients:

Iris will practice measuring out the ingredients using cups and spoons. This will help her understand fractions and quantities, as she can see how different measurements combine to make a whole.

  • Mixing and Baking:

After measuring, Iris will mix all the ingredients together. This is where the science comes in! She will learn how ingredients change when mixed and baked, transforming from a batter to a baked good.

  • Decorating the Treats:

Once the treats are baked and cooled, Iris can decorate them! She can use icing or sprinkles, allowing her to express her creativity and art skills.

  • Sharing and Enjoying:

Finally, Iris can share her delicious creations with family or friends. This will help her practice social skills and the joy of sharing something she made!

Talking Points

  • "Iris, when we measure the flour, we are using math! Can you tell me how many cups we need?"
  • "Look at how the butter and sugar mix together! This is science because we are changing the ingredients!"
  • "After we bake, the batter will turn into something yummy. That’s a chemical change! Isn’t that cool?"
  • "When we decorate, we can use patterns. What colors do you want to use? Patterns are part of math!"
  • "Let’s count how many treats we made. How many can we share with everyone?"
  • "Cooking is like a fun experiment! What do you think will happen if we change an ingredient next time?"
