Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to understand basic addition and subtraction concepts using fun and engaging activities, and will feel more confident in their math skills through interactive learning.

Materials and Prep

  • Khan Academy math module (accessed online)
  • Paper and pencil for note-taking
  • Timer (can use a phone or kitchen timer)
  • Colorful markers or crayons
  • Small objects for counting (like buttons, coins, or blocks)

Before the lesson, make sure the student has access to the Khan Academy platform and is familiar with how to navigate it. Review basic addition and subtraction concepts if needed.

Activities

  • Khan Academy Exploration:

Start with a guided session on Khan Academy. Choose a specific module focusing on addition and subtraction. Allow the student to explore the interactive exercises and videos, helping them as needed.

  • Math Relay Race:

Create a fun relay race where the student has to solve math problems on paper. Set a timer for each round, and for every correct answer, they get to move to the next station. Make it exciting!

  • Counting Crafts:

Using small objects (buttons, coins, etc.), have the student create a visual representation of addition and subtraction problems. For example, they can use 5 buttons and add 3 more to visualize 5 + 3.

  • Math Storytime:

Ask the student to create a short story that includes addition and subtraction problems. They can illustrate their story with colorful markers or crayons, making it a fun and creative way to practice math.

Talking Points

  • "What happens when we add two numbers together? Can you think of an example?"
  • "When we subtract, what are we doing? Can you show me with your counting objects?"
  • "How do you feel when you solve a math problem? Let's celebrate every correct answer!"
  • "Can you find a way to use math in your daily life? Maybe when you're cooking or shopping?"
  • "Why do you think math is important? Let's brainstorm some cool reasons!"
  • "Can you create your own math problems for me? I want to see how creative you can be!"
  • "How did you feel about using Khan Academy? Did it make learning math more fun for you?"
