Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to understand the process of gathering eggs, recognize different types of eggs, and learn how to handle them safely. The student will also gain insights into the importance of eggs in our diet and how they are collected from chickens.

Materials and Prep

  • Access to a safe area where chickens are kept (if available)
  • Two baskets or containers for collecting eggs
  • Soft cloth or towel for egg handling
  • Knowledge about chicken behavior and egg-laying habits (e.g., when they lay eggs and how to approach them safely)

Activities

  • Egg Gathering Adventure: Take a trip to the chicken coop or designated area where eggs are laid. Explain how to approach the chickens calmly and gently. Allow the student to gather eggs, placing them carefully in the basket while discussing what they see.

  • Egg Decorating: After gathering the eggs, use non-toxic markers or safe paints to decorate the eggs. Encourage creativity and talk about different colors and patterns that can be found in nature.

  • Egg Facts Game: Share fun facts about eggs and chickens. For example, how many eggs a chicken can lay in a week. Turn it into a quiz where the student can guess the answers.

Talking Points

  • "Did you know that chickens can lay eggs almost every day? How cool is that?"
  • "When we gather eggs, we have to be very gentle. Can you show me how you would hold an egg?"
  • "Eggs come in different colors! What color do you think your favorite egg is?"
  • "Why do you think eggs are important for us to eat? They help us grow strong!"
  • "What do you think happens to the eggs after we gather them? Let’s pretend we are chefs preparing a yummy meal!"
  • "Chickens are very special animals. Can you tell me what you like most about them?"
