Objective
By the end of this lesson, you will be able to understand basic geometry concepts through hands-on activities using Lego.
Materials and Prep
- Lego bricks in various shapes and colors
- A flat surface to build on
- A pen and paper for note-taking
No prior knowledge or preparation is required for this lesson.
Activities
- Activity 1: Sorting Shapes
- Activity 2: Building with Shapes
- Activity 3: Creating Patterns
Start by sorting the Lego bricks into different piles based on their shapes. For example, separate the bricks with four sides from the bricks with three sides. Discuss the differences between these shapes and how they can be categorized.
Use the Lego bricks to build different shapes, such as squares, rectangles, triangles, and circles. Discuss the properties of each shape as you build, such as the number of sides and corners.
Create patterns using the Lego bricks. Start with simple patterns, such as alternating colors or shapes, and then progress to more complex patterns. Discuss the repetition and symmetry in the patterns.
First Grade Talking Points
- "Geometry is the study of shapes and their properties."
- "Shapes can have different numbers of sides and corners. For example, a square has four sides and four corners, while a triangle has three sides and three corners."
- "We can use Lego bricks to build different shapes and explore their properties."
- "Patterns are sequences that repeat in a predictable way. We can create patterns with Lego bricks by repeating colors, shapes, or both."
- "Symmetry is when something can be divided into two equal parts that are mirror images of each other. Some shapes, like squares and circles, have symmetry."
