Objective
By the end of this lesson, the student will have explored the connections between art and math through Lego building. They will learn about geometric shapes, symmetry, and basic measurement while expressing their creativity by constructing a unique Lego sculpture.
Materials and Prep
- Assorted Lego bricks (different shapes, sizes, and colors)
- Pencil and paper for sketching designs
- Measuring tape or ruler (if available)
- Timer (for timed challenges)
Before the lesson, ensure that the Lego bricks are sorted and easily accessible. Familiarize yourself with basic geometric shapes and concepts of symmetry to facilitate discussions during the activities.
Activities

Shape Hunt:
Go on a shape hunt by finding and identifying different geometric shapes within your Lego collection. Build a model using at least five different shapes and label them!

Symmetry Challenge:
Create a Lego sculpture that is symmetrical. Start by building one half of the sculpture and then replicate it on the other side. Discuss what symmetry means and how it looks in your creation.

Measurement Mania:
Choose a Lego piece and measure its length, width, and height. Then, create a new Lego structure that is twice the size of the original. Compare the measurements and discuss how the size affects the design.

Timed Build:
Set a timer for 10 minutes and challenge yourself to build a structure using only a specific number of bricks (e.g., 20 bricks). This will help you think creatively and mathematically about space and design!
