Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will understand the basics of building a garden, including choosing a location, preparing the soil, and planting seeds. They will also learn the importance of gardening for the environment and how to care for their plants as they grow.

Materials and Prep

  • A clear outdoor space or a designated area for the garden
  • Seeds or seedlings (such as flowers, vegetables, or herbs)
  • Basic gardening tools (like a trowel, hand rake, or shovel, if available)
  • Watering can or hose
  • Compost or organic matter (if available)
  • Notebook and pencil for observations and notes

Before starting, make sure to choose a spot that gets plenty of sunlight and is easily accessible. Discuss what types of plants the student is interested in growing.

Activities

  • Garden Planning

Have the student draw a simple layout of their garden on paper. They can decide where to place different plants based on sunlight and space requirements.

  • Soil Preparation

Teach the student how to prepare the soil by removing weeds, rocks, and debris. If possible, show them how to mix in compost or organic matter to enrich the soil.

  • Seed Planting

Guide the student in planting seeds or seedlings according to the instructions. Discuss the importance of planting depth and spacing.

  • Watering and Care

Show the student how to gently water the newly planted seeds. Discuss the importance of watering and caring for the plants regularly.

  • Observation Journal

Encourage the student to keep a journal of their gardening experience, noting how the plants grow and any changes they observe over time.

Talking Points

  • "Why do you think gardening is important for the environment?"
  • "Did you know that plants help clean the air we breathe? They take in carbon dioxide and give off oxygen!"
  • "What kinds of plants do you want to grow? Some plants need more sunlight than others!"
  • "How can we make sure our plants get enough water without overdoing it?"
  • "Let's think about how we can attract helpful insects to our garden, like bees and butterflies!"
  • "What do you think will happen if we don't take care of our plants? Why is regular care important?"
  • "How can we use our garden to help others, like sharing vegetables with friends or family?"
