Objective
By the end of this lesson, you will be able to identify and explain various natural phenomena related to Earth Science, specifically in the field of nature.
Materials and Prep
- Pen and paper
- Access to a nearby park or natural area
- Prior knowledge of basic Earth Science concepts
Activities
-
Take a nature walk in a nearby park or natural area.
Observe and document at least five different natural phenomena you encounter during the walk. These can include geological formations, weather patterns, plant or animal behavior, etc.
-
Once back home, create a detailed journal entry about your nature walk.
Include descriptions of the natural phenomena you observed, explanations of their causes, and any interesting connections you can make to Earth Science concepts you have learned.
-
Share your journal entry with a family member or friend, and discuss the significance of the natural phenomena you encountered.
Engage in a conversation, exchanging thoughts and ideas about the Earth Science principles behind the observed phenomena.
Twelfth Grade Talking Points
- "During our nature walk, we might come across a variety of geological formations, such as sedimentary rocks, fault lines, or even evidence of past volcanic activity. These formations provide clues about Earth's history and the forces that have shaped our planet over millions of years."
- "As we observe weather patterns during our walk, we can discuss the influence of atmospheric conditions, such as air pressure, temperature, and humidity, on the formation of clouds, precipitation, and even severe weather events like thunderstorms or tornadoes."
- "The behavior of plants and animals can also teach us about the interconnectedness of ecosystems and how they adapt to their environment. For example, observing the migration patterns of birds or the flowering cycles of plants can give us insights into the effects of seasonal changes and climate on living organisms."
- "By understanding the natural phenomena we encounter, we can appreciate the delicate balance of Earth's systems and the importance of preserving our planet's biodiversity. It reminds us of our responsibility to be good stewards of nature and work towards sustainable practices."
