Objective

By the end of this lesson, Zac will explore various aspects of libraries, including their importance in history, the role of literature in society, and how math and science can be found in library resources. Zac will also engage in creative activities that combine art and physical education, making the learning experience both enjoyable and comprehensive.

Materials and Prep

  • Notebook and pen or pencil
  • Art supplies (colored pencils, markers, paper)
  • Access to a library (physical or digital)
  • Basic math tools (calculator, if needed)
  • Research materials (books, articles, etc. available in the library)

Before the lesson, ensure that Zac has access to a library and understands how to navigate it. Discuss the types of resources available and how to find information efficiently.

Activities

  • Library Scavenger Hunt: Zac will create a list of items to find in the library, such as a book published in the 1800s, a biography, or a science magazine. This will help him learn how to navigate the library and discover different sections.
  • Book Cover Art: After selecting a book, Zac will design a new cover for it using his art supplies. He will think about what themes and ideas the book conveys and how to represent that visually.
  • Math in the Library: Zac will choose a book with numerical data (like a science book or a history book with statistics) and create a simple graph or chart based on the data he finds. This will reinforce his math skills while engaging with real-world information.
  • Physical Education - Library Relay: Create a relay race where Zac has to run to different sections of the library to find specific types of books or resources. This will combine physical activity with learning about the library's layout.
  • History of Libraries: Zac will research the history of libraries and present a short summary of what he learned, focusing on how libraries have evolved over time and their significance in society.
