Objective
By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to identify different types of animal homes, understand why animals build them, and create a simple model of an animal home using their imagination.
Materials and Prep
- Paper
- Crayons or markers
- Scissors (with adult supervision)
- Glue (if available)
- Optional: Nature items like leaves or twigs from outside
Before the lesson, it might be helpful to think of a few animals and their homes, like a bird and a nest, or a rabbit and a burrow. This will make it easier to start the discussion!
Activities
-
Animal Home Exploration:
Start by discussing different animals and their homes. Ask the student to name some animals and where they live. For example, "Where do you think a bear sleeps?"
-
Drawing Animal Homes:
Have the student choose their favorite animal and draw its home. Encourage them to be creative! Ask questions like, "What does your animal's home look like?"
-
Build a Model Home:
Using paper, crayons, and any nature items, have the student create a model of the animal home they drew. They can cut out shapes and glue them together to make a 3D model!
-
Animal Home Storytime:
Ask the student to make up a short story about their animal and its home. They can share what their animal does in its home and what makes it special.
Talking Points
- "Can you tell me what kind of home a bird has?"
- "Why do you think animals need homes?"
- "What materials do you think animals use to make their homes?"
- "How do you think an animal feels in its home?"
- "What is your favorite animal, and what kind of home does it have?"
- "Can you imagine what it would be like to live in your animal's home?"
