Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will understand the basics of creating engaging YouTube content, including planning, scripting, and filming a short video. They will also learn about audience engagement and the importance of originality in content creation.

Materials and Prep

  • Smartphone or tablet with a camera
  • Access to a YouTube account (if applicable)
  • Notebook and pen for brainstorming and scripting
  • Quiet space for filming

Before the lesson, ensure that the student has access to a device for filming and that they are familiar with how to use it. Discuss any specific interests they have regarding YouTube content to tailor the lesson to their preferences.

Activities

  • Brainstorming Session

Start with a fun brainstorming activity where the student lists their favorite YouTube channels and what they like about them. Encourage them to think about what topics they are passionate about and how they can incorporate those into their own videos.

  • Scripting a Video

Guide the student in writing a simple script for a short video (1-2 minutes long). They can choose a topic based on their interests, and you can help them structure it with an introduction, main content, and a conclusion.

  • Filming

Have the student film their scripted video. Encourage them to be expressive and have fun with it! Remind them to pay attention to lighting and sound to enhance the quality of their video.

  • Editing Basics

Show the student how to do basic editing on their device (trimming clips, adding text, etc.). If they have access to video editing software or apps, this is a great opportunity to introduce them to simple editing techniques.

  • Share and Reflect

After filming and editing, have the student share their video (if comfortable) with family or friends. Discuss what they learned from the process and what they would like to improve for their next video.
