Objective

In this lesson, the student will learn basic math concepts such as addition, subtraction, and measurement through the fun theme of making potions. By the end of the lesson, the student will be able to create their own potion recipe using simple math skills!

Materials and Prep

  • Pencil and paper for writing down potion recipes
  • Imaginary ingredients (like "unicorn tears," "dragon scales," etc.)
  • Measuring cups (imaginary or drawn on paper)
  • Colorful markers or crayons for decoration
  • Optional: A container to mix potions (like a bowl or jar)

Before the lesson, prepare a list of fun imaginary ingredients and their "magical" effects. Make sure to have a space ready for potion-making activities!

Activities

  • Potion Recipe Creation:

Have the student create their own potion recipe by choosing 3-5 imaginary ingredients. They will need to write down how many of each ingredient they need, practicing addition to find the total number of ingredients.

  • Measuring Ingredients:

Using imaginary measuring cups, the student will "measure" out their ingredients. They can practice subtraction by pretending to pour out some of their ingredients and calculating how much is left.

  • Potion Mixing:

Let the student mix their ingredients together (in a bowl or jar). They can use this opportunity to count how many times they stir their potion, reinforcing counting skills and basic multiplication (e.g., "If I stir 2 times for each ingredient, how many times do I stir in total?").

  • Potion Naming:

After creating their potion, the student can come up with a fun name for it! They can write the name on their recipe and illustrate their potion, using creativity to bring their math magic to life!

Talking Points

  • "What ingredients do you want in your potion? Let's count them together!"
  • "How many total ingredients do we have if we add these two together?"
  • "If you pour out 2 drops of your potion, how many drops do you have left?"
  • "Can you show me how many times you stir? Let’s count together!"
  • "What magical name will your potion have? Let’s write it down!"
  • "Why do you think we need to measure our ingredients? It helps make the potion just right!"
