Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will understand the fundamentals of healthy eating, including the importance of balanced meals, how to read food labels, and the benefits of incorporating a variety of foods into their diet.

Materials and Prep

  • Paper and pencil for note-taking
  • A selection of food packaging (empty boxes, cans, or labels from food items)
  • Access to a computer or smartphone for research (optional)
  • Colorful markers or crayons for creative activities

Before the lesson, gather various food packaging items to use for label reading activities and ensure a quiet space for the student to work. Familiarize yourself with basic nutritional concepts to guide discussions.

Activities

  • Food Label Detective:

The student will examine different food labels and identify key nutritional information such as calories, sugars, fats, and serving sizes. They will create a chart comparing the nutritional values of their favorite snacks.

  • Build a Balanced Plate:

Using paper and markers, the student will design their own balanced meal plate, ensuring they include portions from each food group: proteins, grains, fruits, vegetables, and dairy.

  • Healthy Recipe Creation:

The student will brainstorm and write down a healthy recipe using at least three different food groups. They can also illustrate their recipe to make it visually appealing!

  • Food Scavenger Hunt:

Set up a mini scavenger hunt where the student finds specific foods around the house or pantry that fit into healthy eating categories (like whole grains, fruits, etc.) and explains why they are healthy choices.

Talking Points

  • "Healthy eating is about balance. It’s not just about eating vegetables; it's about enjoying a variety of foods!"
  • "Reading food labels helps you make informed choices. Can you find the amount of sugar in this snack?"
  • "Why do you think it's important to include different food groups in your meals? Each group has unique benefits!"
  • "What’s your favorite healthy meal? Let’s make sure it has proteins, grains, and veggies!"
  • "Remember, healthy eating doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy treats. It’s all about moderation!"
