Objective
By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to understand basic addition and subtraction concepts using fun characters and themes from Plants vs Zombies.
Materials and Prep
- Paper
- Pencil or crayon
- Plants vs Zombies character knowledge (e.g., Peashooter, Sunflower, Zombie)
- Basic understanding of numbers (1-10)
Activities
-
Character Count
Have the student draw their favorite Plants vs Zombies characters and count how many they have drawn. For example, if they draw 3 Peashooters and 2 Sunflowers, ask them how many characters they have in total.
-
Zombie Defense Addition
Use imaginary plants to defend against zombies. For example, say, "If we have 2 Peashooters and 3 Sunflowers, how many plants do we have to stop the zombies?" Help them add the numbers together.
-
Zombie Attack Subtraction
Set up a scenario where zombies attack the plants. If there are 5 plants and 2 zombies come to eat them, ask, "How many plants are left?" Guide them through the subtraction process.
-
Plant Power Points
Create a scoring system where each plant has points. For example, Peashooter = 1 point, Sunflower = 2 points. Have the student add up their points based on how many of each plant they have drawn or imagined.
Talking Points
- "How many characters did you draw? Let's count them together!"
- "If we have 2 Peashooters and 3 Sunflowers, how can we find out how many plants we have in total?"
- "Oh no! If 5 plants are here and 2 zombies come, how many plants will be left? Let's find out!"
- "Each plant has special points! Can you add up the points for all your plants?"
- "Math is like a game! Just like in Plants vs Zombies, we can use our math skills to win!"
