Big idea: Plants need space, light, water, nutrients, and air. Weeds are plants growing where we do not want them. We remove weeds carefully so plants we grow for food or other uses have room to grow.

Safety Notes

  • An adult should check all plants before touching, tasting, or using them. Never eat an unknown plant or weed.
  • Wear gloves when handling weeds or soil, and wash hands afterward.
  • Use garden tools carefully, pointing sharp ends toward the ground.
  • Do not pull weeds growing near poisonous, thorny, stinging, or treated plants.
  • Keep weeds away from pets unless an adult says they are safe.

Segment 1: Hook—The Crowded Garden

Time: 10–12 minutes

Purpose: Introduce the problem and activate prior knowledge.

“Imagine you planted one lettuce seed. You gave it water and sunlight. Then ten other plants began growing right beside it. Would the lettuce have enough room? What might happen?”

Explain that a garden is like a busy room. Every plant needs enough space to spread its roots and leaves. Some plants belong in the garden because we planted them. Other plants appear on their own. These unwanted plants are often called weeds.

Activity 1: Space Stretch

Time: 5–8 minutes

Have each child stand with arms and legs spread out. Explain that the body shape represents a plant using space.

  1. Stand close together like crowded plants.
  2. Try to stretch, turn, and take one step without bumping anyone.
  3. Spread out and try again.
  4. Discuss which arrangement made movement easier and why.

Connection: Roots and leaves also need room instead of being crowded.

Segment 2: What Does “Space” Mean for a Plant?

Time: 10–15 minutes

Plants need space in several important ways:

  • Root space: Roots spread through soil to collect water and nutrients.
  • Leaf space: Leaves need room to reach sunlight.
  • Air space: Air moving around plants can help keep leaves dry and healthy.
  • Water space: Plants need access to water, but too many plants may use the same water.
  • Growth space: A plant needs room to become bigger without being bent, crushed, or shaded.

Ask: “Which part of a plant might have trouble if plants are too close together?” Children think silently, discuss with a partner, and share an answer.

Activity 2: Root-and-Leaf Acting

Time: 5–10 minutes

Assign roles such as roots, leaves, sunlight, water, air, and nutrients. The “roots” reach toward water and nutrients while the “leaves” reach toward sunlight. Add extra “plants” close together and ask what becomes difficult.

For a solo activity, draw a plant with roots below the soil and leaves above it. Add arrows showing where water, nutrients, sunlight, and air go.

Segment 3: What Can Weeds Do?

Time: 10–15 minutes

Weeds can cause problems because they may:

  • Use water that food plants need.
  • Use nutrients from the soil.
  • Block sunlight with large leaves or tall stems.
  • Take space away from roots and leaves.
  • Spread quickly by making many seeds.
  • Hide small food plants from view.
  • Make it harder to harvest or care for the plants we want.

Remind learners that a weed is not always a “bad” plant everywhere. A plant may be useful in one place but a weed in another place. For example, grass is wanted on a lawn but may be a weed in a vegetable bed.

We Do: Cause-and-Effect Questions

  • If a tall weed blocks sunlight, what might happen to a small lettuce plant?
  • If weed roots use much of the water, what might happen after a dry week?
  • If weeds grow around carrots, why might harvesting be harder?

Activity 3: Weed Problem Charades

Time: 5–8 minutes

Write these problems on cards: blocks sunlight, uses water, takes nutrients, crowds roots, spreads seeds, hides a plant. Each child acts out a card while the others guess the problem. After each guess, ask how removing the weed could help.

Time: 10–15 minutes

Room to Grow

Keatyn planted three bean seeds in a sunny garden bed. She placed the seeds several inches apart. Soon, a tiny green plant appeared near one bean. Keatyn was not sure if she had planted it. She looked at her garden map and saw that the bean should be growing in that spot. The other plant had pointed leaves and no label, so she asked an adult for help.

The adult explained that the unknown plant was a weed. Its roots were close to the bean’s roots. The weed could use water and nutrients that the bean needed. Keatyn gently pulled the weed while holding the soil near the bean. Then she placed the weed in a bucket. The bean now had more space to grow.

Write these words on cards: weed, root, nutrient, space, compete, harvest. Write simple definitions on separate cards. Mix them together. Children match each word to its definition, then use one word in a sentence.

Segment 5: Wanted Plant or Weed?

Time: 10–15 minutes

I Do: Model Careful Identification

Explain that we should not guess by looking at only one clue. Use several clues:

  1. Location: Is it growing where a seed was planted?
  2. Garden map or label: Does the plant match the label?
  3. Appearance: Do the leaves, stem, and height match the expected plant?
  4. Growth pattern: Is it spreading quickly or growing in an unusual place?
  5. Adult or plant guide: Can a trusted adult confirm its identity?

Emphasize: “When you are not sure, do not pull it. Ask an adult.” A wanted plant can look like a weed when it is very young.

We Do: Compare Plants

Examine safe plant samples or photographs from a book. Compare leaf shape, stem color, height, location, and labels. Make a chart with the headings Clue, Plant A, and Plant B.

Activity 5: Plant Detective Walk

Time: 5–10 minutes

Walk around the garden or yard with a clipboard. Find five plants. Do not pull anything yet. Record:

  • Where the plant is growing
  • Whether it has a label
  • Leaf shape and color
  • Height or size
  • Wanted plant, possible weed, or unsure

Children must mark “unsure” when they do not have enough evidence.

Segment 6: Plant Identification Reading and Evidence

Time: 10–12 minutes

Mini-Lesson

Scientists use evidence. Evidence is information that helps us decide what something is. In a garden, evidence may include a seed packet, a garden map, a plant label, leaf shape, or an adult’s identification.

Evidence Sort

Read each statement and decide whether it is strong evidence, weak evidence, or not enough information:

  • “It is green, so it must be a weed.”
  • “The label says lettuce, and the plant matches the picture.”
  • “It grew next to a tomato, but we did not plant it there.”
  • “An adult used a plant guide to identify it.”

Explain that color alone is usually weak evidence because many plants are green.

Activity 6: Make a Plant Detective Badge

Time: 5–8 minutes

Children create a paper badge that says Plant Detective. Under the title, write three detective rules:

  1. Check the label or map.
  2. Look closely at the plant.
  3. Ask an adult if unsure.

Segment 7: How to Remove Weeds Safely

Time: 10–15 minutes

I Do: Demonstration

  1. Put on gloves.
  2. Make sure the plant is truly a weed.
  3. Water the soil lightly if it is very dry. Damp soil is often easier to work with.
  4. Hold the soil near the wanted plant so its roots are not disturbed.
  5. Grip the weed low near the soil.
  6. Pull slowly and gently, trying to remove the root.
  7. Place the weed in a bucket or compost area approved by an adult.
  8. Check the area for small pieces or seeds.
  9. Wash hands and clean tools.

For larger or deeply rooted weeds, an adult should use a hand tool. Never yank hard near a wanted plant.

We Do: Practice Motions

Use soft paper “weeds” pushed into a tray of soil or a box filled with crumpled paper. Practice holding the soil, pulling slowly, and placing the weed in the bucket.

Activity 7: Gentle Pull Challenge

Time: 5–10 minutes

Set a timer for three minutes. Children practice removing paper weeds without disturbing labeled “wanted plants.” Give one point for each weed removed gently and one point for leaving every wanted plant in place. Discuss why careful work is more important than speed.

Segment 8: Real Garden Weed Removal

Time: 10–15 minutes

You Do: Guided Practice

Choose a small, safe area. Keatyn identifies one possible weed and explains the evidence before removing it. An adult confirms the choice. Keatyn then follows the safe removal steps.

Gardeners measure space so plants are not too crowded. Use a ruler or measuring tape to measure the distance between plant centers.

  2. A garden row is 24 inches long. Plants are placed 6 inches apart. How many 6-inch spaces fit in the row?
  3. There are 8 wanted plants and 5 weeds. How many plants are there altogether?
  4. Keatyn removes 3 weeds from 9 weeds. How many weeds are left?
  5. One weed uses 2 cups of water each week. How many cups might 4 weeds use?
  6. Two garden beds each have 5 plants. How many plants are there altogether?

Answers: 1) 18 inches; 2) 4 spaces; 3) 13 plants; 4) 6 weeds; 5) 8 cups; 6) 10 plants.

Activity 9: Measuring Mission

Time: 5–10 minutes

Measure the distance between three wanted plants. Record the measurements. Find the shortest distance, longest distance, and difference between them. If multiple children participate, each child measures one pair and compares results.

Segment 10: Math—Garden Data and Graphing

Time: 10–15 minutes

Collect Data

Count plants in a small area. Record data in a table:

Give each child a card labeled with one plant category from the data table. Children line up in groups to make a human bar graph. Discuss which line is longest, shortest, and how many more cards one group has than another.

Segment 11: Why and When to Weed

Time: 10–12 minutes

Discussion

Weeding is often easiest when weeds are small and the soil is slightly damp. If weeds become large, they may have stronger roots and may produce seeds. Removing weeds early can help protect the space needed by wanted plants.

Decision-Making Scenarios

For each scenario, choose the best action and explain why:

  1. A tiny plant is growing beside a labeled carrot, but you are not sure what it is.
  2. A confirmed weed is growing in dry, hard soil.
  3. A tall weed has flowers and is close to a tomato plant.
  4. A small weed is growing far from all garden plants.

Possible answers include ask an adult, water lightly before removing, remove carefully before it spreads seeds, or leave it alone if it is not causing a problem and the adult approves.

Activity 11: Garden Decision Corners

Time: 5–10 minutes

Label three areas Pull, Ask First, and Leave for Now. Read a scenario. Children move to the area that matches their decision and explain their reasoning. Emphasize that “Ask First” is always the correct choice when plant identity is uncertain.

Time: 10–15 minutes

Work together to create a plan for caring for a garden bed or potted plant.

Planning Steps

  1. Choose a wanted plant.
  2. Find out or estimate how much space it needs.
  3. Draw where the plant will go.
  4. List resources it needs: sunlight, water, air, nutrients, and space.
  5. Write how often the area will be checked for weeds.
  6. Write the safe steps for removing a confirmed weed.

Choice

Children may create a drawing, a written plan, a digital slide, a spoken recording, or a model using blocks and string.

Activity 12: Garden Map Relay

Time: 5–10 minutes

Give children plant labels and a blank garden map. One child places or draws a wanted plant. Another child adds the correct space around it using string or a ruler. A third child places “weed” cards in locations that would cause crowding. The group discusses which weeds should be removed first.
