Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to bake a simple cake from scratch and create a basic icing to decorate it. They will learn about the ingredients, the baking process, and the techniques for icing a cake, enhancing their baking skills and creativity.

Materials and Prep

  • 1 cup of flour
  • 1 cup of sugar
  • 1/2 cup of butter
  • 2 eggs
  • 1/2 cup of milk
  • 1 teaspoon of baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract
  • Mixing bowls
  • Measuring cups and spoons
  • Whisk or electric mixer
  • 9-inch round cake pan
  • Oven
  • Cooling rack
  • Ingredients for icing (powdered sugar, butter, milk, vanilla extract)

Before starting the lesson, ensure the oven is preheated to 350°F (175°C) and that all ingredients are measured out and ready to use.

Activities

  • Baking the Cake:

    The student will mix the ingredients together to create the cake batter. They will learn the importance of measuring ingredients accurately and following the recipe step by step.

  • Decorating with Icing:

    Once the cake has cooled, the student will prepare a simple buttercream icing. They will practice spreading and piping the icing on the cake, allowing for creativity in decoration.

  • Taste Test:

    The student will have the opportunity to taste their creation and share it with family or friends. This activity will help them appreciate their hard work and the joy of baking.
