Objective
By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to identify and create simple musical phrases using their voice and body. They will understand that musical phrases are like sentences in music, helping them express their feelings and ideas through sound.
Materials and Prep
- No specific materials are needed for this lesson. Just your voice and body!
- Prepare a comfortable space where the student can sing and move freely.
- Be ready to encourage creativity and have fun with music!
Activities
-
Musical Warm-Up:
Start with a fun warm-up. Sing a simple song together, like "Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star". Encourage the student to clap their hands to the beat. This helps them feel the rhythm!
-
Creating Musical Phrases:
Ask the student to make up a short musical phrase using their voice. For example, they can sing "la, la, la" in a happy way. Then, let them try a different phrase that sounds sad, like "do, do, do." Discuss how the feelings change with different sounds.
-
Body Percussion:
Use their body to create sounds! They can clap, stomp, or tap their knees to make a rhythm. Encourage them to create a short musical phrase with their body sounds and share it with you!
-
Musical Story Time:
Tell a short story and ask the student to add musical phrases to it. For example, when a character is happy, they can sing a happy phrase, and when a character is sad, they can sing a sad phrase. This helps them see how music can tell a story!
Talking Points
- "Did you know that musical phrases are like little sentences? They help us tell stories with music!"
- "Let’s make our own musical phrases! What sounds can you make with your voice?"
- "How does this sound make you feel? Happy, sad, or maybe excited?"
- "Can you show me a musical phrase using your body? Let’s clap and stomp together!"
- "Every time we sing or make music, we are telling a story. What story do you want to tell today?"
