Objective
By the end of this lesson, Emmanuel will learn about airplanes through art, storytelling, history, math, and science, while having fun building and collecting his own paper airplanes!
Materials and Prep
- Paper (for making airplanes)
- Crayons or markers (for decorating the airplanes)
- Simple airplane books or stories (to read together)
- Measuring tape or ruler (for measuring airplane wings)
- Outdoor space or a large room (for flying the airplanes)
Before the lesson, gather all materials and find a comfortable space for reading and flying the airplanes.
Activities
-
Paper Airplane Craft:
Start by folding a piece of paper to create a simple airplane. Emmanuel can help fold and decorate his airplane with crayons or markers. Encourage him to use bright colors and draw designs!
-
Story Time:
Read a fun airplane story together. Discuss the different types of airplanes and what they do. Ask Emmanuel what he likes about airplanes and if he has a favorite!
-
Measuring Wings:
Use a measuring tape or ruler to measure the wings of Emmanuel's airplane. Help him understand that bigger wings can help the airplane fly better!
-
Flying Time:
Take the airplanes outside or to a large room. Let Emmanuel fly his airplane and see how far it goes! Talk about how airplanes fly in the sky.
Talking Points
- "Look at our airplane! What colors did you use? You made it so pretty!"
- "Did you know that airplanes can be big or small? What kind of airplane do you want to fly?"
- "Let’s measure the wings! Can you help me count how many inches they are?"
- "Wow! Look how far your airplane flew! Why do you think it went so far?"
