Objective
By the end of this lesson, the student will understand the importance of tornado safety and be able to demonstrate how to stay safe during a tornado through role play activities.
Materials and Prep
- No special materials are needed for this lesson.
- Make sure to explain what a tornado is in simple terms.
- Prepare a safe space in the home where the student can practice taking cover.
Activities
- Tornado Talk:
Start by having a conversation about what a tornado is. Use simple language to explain that it is a big wind that can be dangerous. Ask the student if they have seen a tornado in pictures or on TV.
- Safe Spot Search:
Walk around the house together to find the safest spot to go during a tornado. This could be a basement or an interior room without windows. Discuss why it's important to be in a safe place.
- Role Play:
Act out what to do when a tornado warning happens. Pretend to hear a weather alert and practice getting to the safe spot quickly. Make it fun by pretending to be a news reporter giving the warning!
- Wrap Up Discussion:
Finish the lesson by talking about what they learned. Ask them to explain why it’s important to stay safe and what they would do if they heard a tornado warning.
