Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will understand the basics of living things, particularly plants, and their role in the ecosystem during the fall season. They will learn about plant life cycles, the importance of plants, and how seasonal changes affect them.

Materials and Prep

  • Notebook or paper for notes
  • Pencil or pen
  • Access to a garden or park (if possible)
  • Camera or smartphone for taking pictures (optional)
  • Magnifying glass (if available)

Before the lesson, it’s helpful to review the basic concepts of living things, including what defines a plant and the different parts of a plant (roots, stems, leaves, flowers). Make sure to discuss the significance of fall and how it impacts plant life.

Activities

  • Nature Walk:

Take a walk in a local park or garden to observe different types of plants. Encourage the student to take notes on the various plants they see, noting their colors, shapes, and any changes that indicate the fall season, such as leaf color change or fruit development.

  • Plant Life Cycle Drawing:

Have the student draw the life cycle of a plant, from seed to maturity. They can label each stage and describe the changes that occur in each phase, emphasizing how plants adapt to the fall season.

  • Leaf Collection:

Collect different types of leaves and examine their shapes, sizes, and colors. Discuss why leaves change color in the fall and what this means for the plant. If possible, press some leaves to create a nature scrapbook.

  • Plant Journal:

Start a plant journal where the student can document their observations about plants throughout the fall. They can include sketches, descriptions, and any interesting facts they learn about the plants they observe.

Talking Points

  • "What do you think makes a plant a living thing? Let's discuss the characteristics of living things together."
  • "During fall, many plants undergo changes. Can you notice any differences in the plants around us?"
  • "Why do you think leaves change color? This is a sign that the plant is preparing for winter!"
  • "Plants are crucial for our ecosystem. They provide oxygen and food for many living creatures. Can you think of some animals that rely on plants?"
  • "What do you think happens to plants during the winter? How do they survive the cold?"
