Objective

By the end of this lesson, Zac will explore the intersection of art, language, history, mathematics, physical education, science, and social studies through the lens of metal detecting at local lakes. He will gain a deeper understanding of the historical context of artifacts, the scientific principles behind metal detection, and improve his physical skills while engaging in a fun and educational activity.

Materials and Prep

• Notebook and pen for taking notes
• Access to a metal detector (if available)
• Local maps of lakes and historical sites
• Internet access for research
• Measuring tape or ruler for measuring artifacts
• Art supplies (paper, colored pencils, etc.) for creating a treasure map)

Before the lesson, it’s helpful to research local laws regarding metal detecting and to identify safe and permitted areas for exploration.

Activities

• Artifact Exploration:

  Zac will research common artifacts found in local lakes. He can create a list of items he hopes to find and draw pictures of them in his notebook.

• Treasure Map Creation:

  Zac will use the art supplies to create a treasure map of a local lake, marking where he plans to search for artifacts. He can include symbols for different types of finds.

• Math Measurement Challenge:

  Using a measuring tape, Zac will practice measuring distances between different points on his treasure map. He can calculate the area of the lake he plans to search.

• Physical Activity:

  Zac will take a walk or bike ride to a nearby lake to practice using a metal detector (if available). This will help him develop physical endurance while enjoying the outdoors.

• History Connection:

  Zac will research the history of the local area and any notable events or people associated with it. He can write a short report on what he learns.

• Science Experiment:

  Zac will explore the science behind metal detection, learning how metal detectors work. He can conduct a simple experiment to see which types of metals are detected.
