Objective
By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to apply arithmetic skills to solve problems related to Lego constructions.
Materials and Prep
- Lego bricks
- Paper
- Pencil
No prior knowledge is required for this lesson.
Activities
-
Building with Lego:
Ask the student to build a simple Lego structure using a specific number of bricks. For example, ask them to build a tower using 5 bricks. Once they have built it, ask them to count the number of bricks used and write it down on the paper.
-
Addition with Lego:
Ask the student to build two separate Lego structures using different numbers of bricks. For example, ask them to build one structure with 3 bricks and another with 4 bricks. Then, ask them to combine the two structures and count the total number of bricks used. Have them write down the addition equation (3 + 4 = 7) on the paper.
-
Subtraction with Lego:
Ask the student to build a Lego structure using a certain number of bricks, and then remove a specific number of bricks from it. For example, ask them to build a structure with 8 bricks and then remove 3 bricks. Have them count the remaining bricks and write down the subtraction equation (8 - 3 = 5) on the paper.
Second Grade Talking Points
- "Arithmetic is a branch of mathematics that deals with numbers and basic operations like addition and subtraction."
- "We can use arithmetic to solve problems and answer questions."
- "Lego can be a fun way to practice arithmetic skills because we can count the number of bricks and perform addition and subtraction with them."
- "When we add two numbers together, we find the total or sum of the numbers."
- "When we subtract one number from another, we find the difference between the numbers."
- "In our activities today, we will be building Lego structures and using arithmetic to count the number of bricks and perform addition and subtraction."
