Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will have a comprehensive understanding of essential home economics skills, including house cleaning, cooking, table setting, and laundry management. They will gain practical experience in these areas, fostering independence and responsibility in managing a household.

Materials and Prep

  • Cleaning supplies (broom, dustpan, mop, cleaning spray)
  • Cooking ingredients (simple recipe ingredients)
  • Tableware (plates, utensils, napkins)
  • Washing machine and laundry detergent
  • Drying rack or dryer
  • Clothes for folding
  • Bed linens
  • Timer or clock

Before the lesson, ensure that the student understands basic safety precautions in the kitchen and while using cleaning supplies. Review any recipes or cleaning tasks that will be performed during the lesson.

Activities

  • House Cleaning Challenge

    Set a timer for 15 minutes and have the student clean a designated area of the house. This could include dusting, sweeping, or organizing. After the time is up, review what they accomplished and discuss efficient cleaning strategies.

  • Cooking Class

    Choose a simple recipe that the student can prepare independently. Guide them through measuring ingredients, following the recipe, and cooking. Discuss the importance of kitchen safety and cleanliness while cooking.

  • Table Setting Practice

    Have the student set the table for a meal. Teach them the proper placement of plates, utensils, and glasses. Discuss the importance of table etiquette and presentation.

  • Laundry Day

    Walk the student through the process of sorting clothes, loading the washing machine, and starting a cycle. Once the laundry is done, demonstrate how to properly fold clothes and put them away.

  • Making Beds

    Teach the student how to strip a bed and make it up with clean linens. Discuss the benefits of making the bed daily and how it contributes to a tidy living space.
