Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will have a better understanding of the history of the Southwest region of the United States, including its Native American cultures, early settlers, and natural environment. The student will also create an art project that reflects their learning, connecting history, art, science, and social studies.

Materials and Prep

  • Paper and colored pencils or markers
  • Books or printed materials about Southwest history (Native American tribes, Spanish explorers, etc.)
  • Access to nature (a garden, park, or backyard for the science activity)
  • Art supplies for the final project (e.g., clay, paints, or collage materials)

Before the lesson, gather information about the different Native American tribes in the Southwest, key historical events, and the region's unique geography and ecosystems.

Activities

  • Story Time: Read a story or watch a short video about the history of the Southwest, focusing on the Native American tribes and their cultures. Discuss what was learned and how it relates to the present.
  • Nature Walk: Take a walk outside to observe local plants and animals. Discuss how the environment of the Southwest is different from other regions. What plants and animals are unique to this area?
  • Art Project: Create a piece of art inspired by the Southwest. This could be a painting of a desert landscape, a sculpture of a Native American artifact, or a collage that represents the different cultures found in the Southwest.
