Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will understand the concept of the Fruit of the Spirit, including love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. The student will be able to identify and express these traits through fun activities and discussions.

Materials and Prep

  • Paper
  • Crayons or markers
  • Fruits (real or toy fruits) to represent each Fruit of the Spirit
  • Space for movement activities
  • A comfortable spot to sit and talk

Before the lesson, gather all materials in one place and ensure the area is safe for movement activities. Familiarize yourself with the Fruit of the Spirit and think of examples from everyday life.

Activities

  • Fruit Drawing:

The student will draw their favorite fruit and then write or say which Fruit of the Spirit it represents. For example, a banana can represent joy because it’s bright and happy!

  • Fruit of the Spirit Dance:

Play some fun music and have the student dance. When the music stops, call out a Fruit of the Spirit, and the student must freeze in a pose that represents that fruit (e.g., a gentle pose for gentleness).

  • Story Time:

Share a simple story or example that illustrates one of the Fruits of the Spirit, asking questions about how the characters showed love, kindness, or patience.

  • Fruit of the Spirit Garden:

Using the fruits you gathered, create a "garden" on the floor. Each fruit represents a different trait. Discuss each one as the student places them in the garden.

Talking Points

  • "Do you know what love is? Love is when we care for others. Can you think of someone you love?"
  • "Joy is like a big smile! What makes you feel happy or joyful?"
  • "Peace is when we feel calm inside. Can you take a deep breath and show me a peaceful face?"
  • "Patience is waiting without getting upset. Can you wait for 5 seconds before you answer me?"
  • "Kindness is being nice to others. Can you think of a kind thing you did today?"
  • "Goodness means doing what is right. What is something good you can do?"
  • "Faithfulness is being loyal. Can you think of a friend you can always count on?"
  • "Gentleness is being soft and careful. Can you show me how to be gentle with a baby animal?"
  • "Self-control is making good choices. Can you think of a time you made a good choice?"
