Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to create a creative writing piece that explores Elizabeth Ann's feelings and thoughts as she searches for Aunt Abigail in "Understood Betsy." The student will learn how to express emotions and develop a storyline based on the character's journey.

Materials and Prep

  • Paper
  • Pencil or pen
  • Quiet space for writing
  • Imagination!

Before the lesson, it would be helpful to review the book "Understood Betsy," focusing on the character of Elizabeth Ann and her relationship with Aunt Abigail. Think about what it would feel like to be in her shoes.

Activities

  • Character Exploration:

Start by discussing Elizabeth Ann's character. Ask the student to describe her personality and how she feels about Aunt Abigail. This will help them understand the emotional context of the story.

  • Writing Prompt:

Give the student a writing prompt: "Imagine you are Elizabeth Ann. Write a letter to Aunt Abigail telling her how much you miss her and what you want to say when you find her." Encourage them to use their imagination and express their feelings.

  • Story Map:

Have the student create a simple story map that outlines where Elizabeth Ann might go to find Aunt Abigail. They can draw pictures and write down ideas about what happens on her journey.

  • Share and Discuss:

Once the student has finished writing, let them read their letter or story aloud. Discuss what they enjoyed about writing it and how they think Elizabeth Ann feels during her search.

Talking Points

  • "What do you think Elizabeth Ann feels when she realizes Aunt Abigail is missing?"
  • "Why is it important for Elizabeth Ann to find Aunt Abigail? What does she mean to her?"
  • "How would you feel if you were in Elizabeth Ann's shoes? What would you do?"
  • "Can you think of a time when you missed someone? How did you feel?"
  • "What kinds of things do you think Elizabeth Ann might see on her journey to find Aunt Abigail?"
  • "Why do you think stories about characters searching for someone are interesting?"
  • "What do you want to tell Aunt Abigail if you were Elizabeth Ann?"
