Objective
By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to recall multiplication facts up to 12x12 using fun dragon-themed activities that make learning enjoyable and memorable.
Materials and Prep
- Paper
- Pencil or colored markers
- Dragon-themed story or myth (can be made up)
- Timer (optional for some activities)
Before starting the lesson, make sure to have a basic understanding of multiplication facts up to 12x12. Think about your favorite dragons and how they might help you learn!
Activities
-
Dragon Multiplication Quest
Transform the learning space into a dragon's lair! Create a treasure map with multiplication problems leading to different "treasures" (answers). As the student solves each problem, they move closer to the treasure!
-
Dragon Drawing Challenge
Have the student draw their own dragon. For each multiplication fact they solve correctly, they get to add a unique feature to their dragon, like wings or fire-breathing abilities!
-
Dragon Fact Relay
Set up a relay race where each station has a multiplication fact to solve. Once they solve it, they can "fly" to the next station. Time them to make it more exciting!
Talking Points
- "Did you know that dragons can be great at math? Let’s help them find their treasure by solving these multiplication problems!"
- "Each time you solve a multiplication fact, imagine your dragon getting stronger and more powerful!"
- "Multiplication is like adding the same number over and over. If you have 3 dragons and each dragon has 4 treasures, how many treasures do you have in total?"
- "Think of multiplication as a dragon flying high. The higher it flies, the more it multiplies its treasure!"
- "Every dragon has its own special abilities. Just like you have your own special way of learning multiplication!"
- "Remember, practice makes perfect! The more you practice these facts, the more powerful your dragon will become!"
