Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to identify and understand the different elements of a story, including characters, setting, plot, conflict, and resolution. They will also create their own short story using these elements.

Materials and Prep

  • Paper
  • Pencil or colored markers
  • Imagination!

Before the lesson, think of a few favorite stories or books to discuss. This will help the student relate to the elements of a story.

Activities

  • Story Element Hunt: Start by discussing the five main elements of a story: characters, setting, plot, conflict, and resolution. Then, choose a favorite story together and identify each element. For example, ask, "Who are the main characters?" and "Where does the story take place?"

  • Draw Your Story: After identifying the elements, have the student create a drawing that represents their favorite story. They can illustrate the main character, the setting, or an important event from the plot.

  • Create Your Own Story: Encourage the student to write a short story using the elements discussed. They can start with a character, decide on a setting, and create a simple plot with a conflict and resolution. Remind them to be creative!

Talking Points

  • "What do you think makes a character interesting? Is it their actions, their feelings, or something else?"
  • "Can you tell me about a setting that you really liked in a story? Why do you think it was important?"
  • "What happens in the story? That’s called the plot! Can you explain it in a few sentences?"
  • "Every story has a problem or conflict. What was the conflict in your favorite story?"
  • "How did the story end? That's the resolution! Did the characters solve their problem?"
  • "If you could change one thing about the story, what would it be? How would that change the plot?"
  • "Let’s think about how you can use these story elements in your own story. What character do you want to create?"
  • "Remember, stories can be funny, scary, or even magical! What kind of story do you want to tell?"
  • "Every great story starts with a great idea! What’s your story idea going to be?"
