Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will learn how to bake a simple loaf of bread with their mom, understanding the ingredients, the steps involved, and the joy of creating something delicious together!

Materials and Prep

  • Flour
  • Water
  • Yeast
  • Salt
  • Mixing bowl
  • Spoon for mixing
  • Clean surface for kneading
  • Oven (with adult supervision)
  • Loaf pan (if available)

Before starting, make sure to wash your hands and have all the ingredients measured out. Talk about what each ingredient does in the bread-making process!

Activities

  • Ingredient Exploration: Identify and smell each ingredient. Discuss what they think each one does in the bread.
  • Let’s smell the flour! What do you think it will taste like when we mix it with water and yeast?

  • Mixing Fun: In the mixing bowl, combine flour, salt, and yeast. Then, slowly add water while stirring with a spoon.
  • Can you feel the dough changing as we mix? It’s getting sticky, just like glue!

  • Kneading the Dough: After mixing, it's time to knead! Turn the dough out onto a clean surface and push, fold, and stretch it.
  • Use your muscles! How does it feel? Is it soft or hard? Let’s see if we can make it super smooth!

  • Waiting Game: Place the kneaded dough in a bowl, cover it, and wait for it to rise. Talk about what’s happening during this time.
  • Can you see the dough getting bigger? That’s the yeast working hard to make our bread fluffy!

  • Baking Time: Once the dough has risen, shape it, place it in the loaf pan, and bake it in the oven (with mom’s help!).
  • What do you think will happen when we put it in the oven? It will become warm and yummy!

  • Taste Test: Once the bread is baked and cooled, it’s time to taste! Discuss how it smells and tastes.
  • Wow, we made this! What do you think? Is it crunchy on the outside and soft on the inside?

Talking Points

  • What is bread? “Bread is a yummy food made from flour, water, and yeast. It can be soft or crunchy!”
  • What does yeast do? “Yeast is like a tiny helper that makes our bread rise and become fluffy!”
  • Why do we knead? “Kneading helps mix everything together and makes the dough strong and stretchy!”
  • What happens when we bake? “Baking makes the dough hot, and it changes into bread. It smells so good!”
  • Why is waiting important? “Waiting for the dough to rise is like giving it a nap so it can grow big and strong!”
  • How does it feel to bake? “Baking is fun because we get to create something delicious and share it with others!”
