Objective
By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to identify at least three different animals around Libby Lake, understand their habitats, and express their creativity through art inspired by their observations.
Materials and Prep
- Comfortable walking shoes
- Water bottle
- A small notebook or sketchpad
- Crayons or colored pencils
- Sun protection (hat, sunscreen)
- Snack (if desired)
Before the lesson, ensure the weather is suitable for a walk and that the student is dressed appropriately. Discuss basic safety rules for walking near water and observing wildlife.
Activities
-
Nature Walk:
Take a leisurely walk around Libby Lake, encouraging the student to look for birds, ducks, and turtles. Pause frequently to observe and discuss what they see.
-
Animal Spotting:
Challenge the student to spot different animals and make a tally of how many they see. This can be done by drawing a simple picture of each animal in their notebook.
-
Art Creation:
After the walk, have the student use their notebook to draw their favorite animal they saw at the lake. Encourage them to use bright colors and be creative!
-
Story Time:
Have a short story time where the student can share their drawings and tell a little story about what the animal was doing when they saw it.
Talking Points
- "What animals do you see around the lake? Can you tell me what they look like?"
- "Do you think the ducks like to swim in the water? Why do you think that?"
- "Look at the turtles! Where do you think they like to live? Is it in the water or on the land?"
- "Can you draw me a picture of your favorite animal? What colors will you use?"
