Objective

By the end of this lesson, Charlie will have learned how to make delicious cinnamon rolls from scratch. He will understand the basic principles of baking, including measuring ingredients, mixing, kneading dough, and following a recipe. Most importantly, he will enjoy the fruits of his labor by tasting the freshly baked cinnamon rolls!

Materials and Prep

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 packet (2 1/4 tsp) active dry yeast
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1/4 cup butter
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp cinnamon
  • 1 egg
  • Filling: 1/4 cup butter (softened), 1/2 cup brown sugar, 1 tsp cinnamon
  • Icing: 1 cup powdered sugar, 2 tbsp milk, 1/2 tsp vanilla extract

Before starting, ensure that all ingredients are at room temperature. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) to have it ready for baking the rolls.

  • Measuring Ingredients:

    Charlie will practice measuring the ingredients accurately. This is important in baking, as precise measurements can affect the outcome of the recipe.

  • Mixing and Kneading:

    He will learn how to mix the dough and knead it properly. This activity will help him understand the texture of dough and how to develop gluten.

  • Rolling and Shaping:

    Charlie will roll out the dough, spread the filling, and shape the cinnamon rolls. This part is fun and allows for creativity in how he wants to present his rolls!

  • Baking and Icing:

    Finally, he will bake the rolls and prepare the icing. This will teach him about the baking process and how to make a delicious topping for his creation.
