Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will learn how to make rice paper spring rolls while integrating concepts from English, Math, and Science. The student will develop cooking skills, understand ingredient measurements, and explore the science behind cooking techniques.

Materials and Prep

  • Rice paper sheets
  • Vegetables (e.g., carrots, cucumbers, bell peppers)
  • Protein (e.g., shrimp, chicken, tofu)
  • Fresh herbs (e.g., mint, cilantro)
  • Dipping sauce (e.g., peanut sauce, hoisin sauce)
  • Cutting board and knife
  • Large bowl of warm water

Before the lesson, make sure all ingredients are washed and prepped. Discuss any allergies with the student to ensure all ingredients are safe to use.

Activities

  • Ingredient Exploration:

Have the student research the nutritional benefits of each ingredient used in the spring rolls. They can create a chart to display their findings.

  • Math Measurements:

Incorporate math by having the student measure out the quantities of each ingredient needed for the spring rolls. Discuss fractions and conversions if necessary.

  • Cooking Technique Demonstration:

Guide the student through the process of soaking the rice paper and rolling the spring rolls. Discuss the science behind why rice paper needs to be soaked in warm water.

  • Creative Writing:

After making the spring rolls, have the student write a short paragraph describing their experience, including what they learned and what they enjoyed most about the process.

Talking Points

  • "Fresh herbs add flavor and nutrients. What are some other herbs you like to cook with?"
  • "Cooking is a science! When we heat food, what happens to the molecules inside?"
  • "How can we make our spring rolls colorful? Let's think about the different colors of vegetables we can use!"
  • "What sauce do you think will pair best with our spring rolls? Let's taste test a few!"
  • "Writing about our cooking experience helps us remember what we learned. What was your favorite part of making these spring rolls?"
