Objective
By the end of this lesson, Kiddo will understand how to read and add fractions, and be able to apply this knowledge by baking a simple recipe that incorporates fractions.
Materials and Prep
- Measuring cups (1 cup, 1/2 cup, 1/4 cup)
- Measuring spoons (1 tablespoon, 1 teaspoon)
- A simple baking recipe (like cookies or pancakes) that uses fractions
- A whiteboard or paper for writing fractions
- Pencil or markers
- Oven (with adult supervision)
Before the lesson, make sure to choose a simple recipe that uses fractions and gather all the materials needed for baking.
Activities
-
Fraction Flashcards:
Create flashcards with different fractions (like 1/2, 1/4, 3/4) and have Kiddo practice reading them aloud. You can also ask questions like, "What does 1/2 mean?" to reinforce understanding.
-
Fraction Addition Game:
Use a whiteboard to write down simple fraction addition problems (like 1/4 + 1/4). Let Kiddo solve them and explain how they got the answer. Make it fun by using colorful markers!
-
Baking Time:
Follow the chosen recipe together. As you measure each ingredient, discuss the fractions involved (like 1/2 cup of sugar). Ask Kiddo questions like, "How many 1/4 cups do we need to make 1 cup?"
Talking Points
- "Fractions are like slices of a pizza! If you have a whole pizza, and you cut it into 4 slices, each slice is 1/4 of the pizza."
- "When we add fractions, we need to have the same bottom number, or denominator. It's like having the same size pizza slices!"
- "If I have 1/4 of a cup of flour and I add another 1/4 cup, how many quarters do I have? That's right! 2/4, which is the same as 1/2!"
- "When we bake, we use fractions to measure ingredients. If a recipe says to use 1/2 cup of sugar, we can use our measuring cups to get it just right!"
- "Remember, cooking is like math! We can have fun with fractions while making something yummy!"
