Objective

By the end of this lesson, Omolara will understand the basic concepts of the sense of taste, including the five primary tastes, how taste works with our sense of smell, and the importance of taste in our daily lives. She will also conduct fun experiments to explore her own taste preferences.

Materials and Prep

  • Various food items (e.g., sweet fruits like strawberries, salty snacks like pretzels, sour items like lemons, bitter items like dark chocolate, and umami-rich foods like tomatoes)
  • Paper and colored pencils for drawing and notes
  • Small bowls or plates to hold food items
  • Water for rinsing the palate

Before the lesson, prepare a variety of food items and ensure Omolara is comfortable trying different tastes. Discuss any allergies or dislikes she may have.

Activities

  • Taste Testing Challenge

Omolara will taste each food item one at a time and identify the flavor. She can use a chart to record her guesses and mark which taste category each food belongs to (sweet, sour, salty, bitter, umami).

  • Flavor Pairing Experiment

After identifying individual tastes, Omolara can mix different food items to see how flavors combine. For example, she can try mixing sweet and salty or sour and umami to discover new tastes.

  • Draw Your Taste Map

Using paper and colored pencils, Omolara will create a "taste map" where she draws her favorite foods and labels them with the corresponding taste. This will help visualize her preferences.

  • Discussion on Taste and Smell

Omolara will learn how taste and smell work together. She can try pinching her nose while tasting food to see how it affects her perception of flavor.

Talking Points

  • "Did you know that our tongue can detect five basic tastes? They are sweet, sour, salty, bitter, and umami!"
  • "Taste is not just about what we eat; it also involves our sense of smell. When you eat something, the aroma contributes to how we perceive its flavor!"
  • "Why do you think taste is important? It helps us choose foods that are safe and enjoyable to eat!"
  • "Can you think of a time when you tasted something unexpected? How did your taste buds react?"
  • "Let’s explore how different combinations of flavors can create new taste experiences. What do you think will happen when we mix sweet and salty?"
