By the end of this lesson, Archer will be able to identify key facts about West Virginia, including its statehood, capital, state symbols, and notable people from the state. Archer will also gain an appreciation for West Virginia's history and culture.
Materials and Prep
- Paper and colored pencils or markers
- Map of West Virginia (can be drawn or printed)
- Access to a clock or timer
- Notebook for notes and drawings
Before the lesson, make sure to have a quiet space to learn and create. You might also want to set a timer for some activities to keep things fun and exciting!
Activities
- West Virginia Timeline: Create a timeline of important events that led to West Virginia becoming a state on June 20, 1863. Archer can draw pictures or write short descriptions for each event.
- State Symbols Art: Archer will draw the state bird (the Northern Cardinal), the state tree (the Sugar Maple), and the state animal (the Black Bear). This will help him remember these symbols and their importance.
- Famous West Virginians: Research two famous people from West Virginia (like John Brown or Jennifer Garner) and create a mini-poster about each one, including drawings and fun facts.
- West Virginia Quiz: At the end of the lesson, Archer can take a fun quiz where he answers questions about what he learned. You can ask him questions like "What is the capital of West Virginia?" and "What is the nickname of West Virginia?"
