Objective
By the end of this lesson, Brooklynn will be able to identify and categorize different healthy foods as either big or small, and understand the benefits of eating a variety of foods to stay healthy and strong.
Materials and Prep
- Paper and crayons or markers for drawing
- A list of various healthy foods (e.g., apples, bananas, broccoli, carrots, watermelon, etc.)
- A large space to move around for the activities
Before the lesson, think about how to explain the difference between big and small foods, and maybe practice some fun ways to categorize them together.
Activities
-
Food Size Sorting: Create two large circles on the floor (one for big foods and one for small foods). Call out the names of various healthy foods and have Brooklynn run to the correct circle based on whether the food is big or small.
-
Drawing Time: Ask Brooklynn to draw her favorite big and small healthy foods. Encourage her to color them and label each drawing with its name.
-
Food Charades: Take turns acting out different healthy foods. Brooklynn can either act out a big food or a small food, and you can guess what it is. This will help her remember the sizes while having fun!
Talking Points
- "Can you think of a big fruit? How about a small one?"
- "Why do you think it's important to eat both big and small healthy foods?"
- "What is your favorite big food? What about your favorite small food?"
- "Did you know that eating a variety of foods helps our bodies stay strong?"
- "Can you name some vegetables that are big? And some that are small?"
- "How do you feel when you eat healthy foods? Do they give you energy?"
