Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to understand basic Afrikaans vocabulary related to everyday objects and will be able to form simple sentences using these words.

Materials and Prep

  • Paper and colored pencils or markers
  • A list of common objects in Afrikaans (e.g., tafel - table, stoel - chair, boek - book)
  • Flashcards with pictures of the objects and their Afrikaans names
  • Access to a quiet space for activities

Before the lesson, familiarize yourself with the list of common objects in Afrikaans and prepare the flashcards. Make sure to have a fun and engaging atmosphere for learning!

Activities

  • Word Hunt: Create a scavenger hunt around the house where the student has to find objects based on their Afrikaans names. For example, say "Find the stoel!" and the student has to locate a chair.
  • Drawing and Labeling: Have the student draw their favorite room in the house and label the objects in Afrikaans. For example, they can draw a "tafel" (table) and "stoel" (chair) and write the names next to them.
  • Flashcard Match: Use the flashcards to play a matching game. The student can match the picture of an object to its Afrikaans name. For added fun, time how long it takes to match all the cards!
  • Simple Sentences: Teach the student how to form simple sentences using the vocabulary learned. For example, "Die boek is op die tafel" (The book is on the table). Let the student create their own sentences and share them with you.
