Objective
By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to recognize numbers from 1 to 10, count objects, and understand the basic concept of addition through fun and engaging games.
Materials and Prep
- Paper and crayons or markers
- Small household items (like toys, blocks, or buttons) for counting
- Space to play games (like a living room or backyard)
- Optional: A timer (can use a phone or kitchen timer)
Before the lesson, make sure to gather all materials and create a fun and inviting space for the activities. Think about how to make it enjoyable and stress-free!
Activities
-
Counting Treasure Hunt:
Hide small items around the room or yard. Have the student find them and count how many they collected. They can draw the items they found and write the number next to each drawing!
-
Number Drawing:
Ask the student to draw a number from 1 to 10. Then, have them draw that many objects to match the number. For example, if they draw a "3", they can draw three stars!
-
Addition Game:
Using small items, create simple addition problems. For example, place 2 blocks and then add 3 more blocks. Ask, "How many blocks do we have now?" Let them count to find the answer!
-
Musical Numbers:
Play some music and have the student dance around. When the music stops, call out a number. The student has to find that many items quickly and hold them up!
Talking Points
- "Can you find 5 toys? Let’s count them together!"
- "What number did you draw? How many stars do we need to draw to match that number?"
- "If we have 2 blocks and we add 3 more, how many do we have? Let’s count them!"
- "When the music stops, listen for the number. How fast can you find that many items?"
- "Great job counting! Numbers are fun, and you’re doing amazing!"
