Objective

By the end of this lesson, Kynlee will understand the basics of community and how different cultures contribute to society. She will learn about her own community and explore what makes it unique, as well as the importance of diversity in social studies.

Materials and Prep

  • Paper
  • Colored pencils or markers
  • Scissors
  • Glue
  • A large piece of cardboard (or poster board)
  • Access to a quiet space for discussions and activities

Before the lesson, think about the different cultures and communities in your area. It might be helpful to brainstorm a list of local places that represent those cultures, like restaurants, festivals, or community centers.

Activities

  • Community Mapping: Kynlee will create a map of her community on the cardboard. She can draw important places like schools, parks, and cultural centers. This will help her visualize where different cultures are represented in her neighborhood.

  • Culture Collage: Using the paper, colored pencils, and scissors, Kynlee will cut out pictures or draw symbols that represent different cultures found in her community. She will glue these images onto the cardboard map to show the diversity around her.

  • Story Time: Kynlee can share a story about a cultural event or festival she has attended or learned about. This will help her connect personal experiences with the broader concepts of community and culture.

  • Discussion Circle: Finally, have a discussion about why it's important to learn about different cultures. Kynlee can share what she learned from her activities and what she finds interesting about the cultures she explored.

Talking Points
