Objective

By the end of this lesson, Brier will have a deeper understanding of mathematical concepts such as algebra and geometry, and will be able to apply these concepts to solve real-world problems creatively and effectively.

Materials and Prep

  • Notebook and pen/pencil for note-taking and problem-solving.
  • Calculator for performing calculations.
  • Whiteboard or large paper for visual demonstrations (optional).
  • Access to a timer for timed activities.
  • Preparation of real-life scenarios where math is applicable (e.g., budgeting, cooking, or planning a trip).

Activities

  • Math in Real Life:

Discuss various scenarios where math is used in everyday life, such as budgeting for groceries or calculating travel distances. Brier can create a budget for a fictional event, like a birthday party, using algebra to determine costs.

  • Geometry Scavenger Hunt:

Organize a scavenger hunt around the house or yard where Brier must find objects that represent different geometric shapes. For example, a book could represent a rectangle, and a ball could represent a sphere. Brier can sketch these shapes and label their properties.

  • Math Puzzles:

Engage in solving math puzzles and riddles that require critical thinking and application of mathematical concepts. These can include logic puzzles or Sudoku that challenge Brier's problem-solving skills.

  • Creative Graphing:

Have Brier create a graph that represents a personal interest, such as favorite movies or music genres. Brier can use different colors and styles to make the graph visually appealing while practicing data representation.

Talking Points

  • "Math is not just about numbers; it's a tool we use to make sense of the world around us." This helps Brier understand the real-world application of math.
  • "Every time you budget or plan, you're using math!" Relating math to everyday tasks makes it more relatable.
  • "Geometry isn't just shapes; it helps us understand space and design." This highlights the importance of geometry in various fields.
  • "Problem-solving is a skill that goes beyond math; it's essential in life." Encouraging Brier to see math as a life skill rather than just a subject.
  • "Creativity in math can lead to innovative solutions." This encourages Brier to think outside the box when approaching math problems.
