Objective
By the end of this lesson, you will be able to understand various aspects of space and its relationship to Earth, including the solar system, planets, and the moon.
Materials and Prep
- Pen or pencil
- Blank paper or notebook
No prior knowledge is required for this lesson.
Activities
-
Create a Solar System Model:
Using the blank paper or notebook, draw and color a model of the solar system. Include the Sun, eight planets, and the asteroid belt. Label each planet and the Sun. Be creative and make it colorful!
-
Moon Phases Observation:
Observe the moon each night for a week and draw its shape in your notebook. Write down the date and describe the moon's appearance. Notice how the moon changes shape throughout the week. What patterns do you notice?
-
Planet Research:
Choose one planet from the solar system and conduct research on it. Write a short report or create a poster with information about the planet's size, composition, atmosphere, and any interesting features. Present your findings to a family member or friend.
Fifth Grade Talking Points
- "The solar system is made up of the Sun, planets, and other celestial objects."
- "The Sun is a star, and it is the center of our solar system."
- "There are eight planets in our solar system: Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune."
- "The planets in our solar system vary in size, composition, and atmosphere."
- "The moon is Earth's natural satellite and orbits around our planet."
- "The moon goes through different phases, such as full moon, new moon, and crescent moon."
- "The moon's phases are a result of its position relative to the Sun and Earth."
- "The asteroid belt is located between Mars and Jupiter and contains numerous rocky objects."
