Objective
By the end of this lesson, Jordan will gain a comprehensive understanding of coding systems such as ICD-10 and CPT, while integrating knowledge across various subjects including Art, English, Foreign Language, History, Math, Music, Physical Education, Science, and Social Studies. Jordan will also develop critical thinking and life skills through engaging activities and discussions.
Materials and Prep
- Notebook and writing tools
- Access to a computer or tablet for research
- Art supplies (colored pencils, paper, etc.)
- Music player or instrument (if applicable)
- Physical space for movement activities
- Basic understanding of ICD-10 and CPT coding systems (research beforehand)
Activities
-
Creative Coding Art:
Jordan will create a visual representation of the ICD-10 and CPT coding systems. This can be a poster or a digital infographic that illustrates how these systems are used in healthcare. This activity combines art and science, allowing for creativity while learning about coding.
-
Spelling and Vocabulary Challenge:
Jordan will compile a list of coding-related terms (e.g., diagnosis, procedure, etc.) and create flashcards for spelling and definition practice. This will enhance English language skills while focusing on specific vocabulary.
-
Role-Playing in History:
Jordan will research the history of medical coding systems and role-play as a historical figure who contributed to these systems. This activity will help Jordan understand the significance of coding in healthcare history.
-
Math in Medicine:
Jordan will work on simple math problems related to coding, such as calculating costs based on different procedures and diagnoses. This will reinforce math skills through real-world applications.
-
Musical Coding:
Jordan will create a short song or rap that includes important coding terms and their meanings. This fun activity will help with memory retention while integrating music into learning.
-
Physical Education Coding Relay:
Jordan will participate in a relay race where each station represents a different coding term. At each station, Jordan must explain the term before moving on. This combines physical activity with learning.
-
Science Experiment with Life Skills:
Jordan will conduct a simple science experiment that relates to health (e.g., measuring heart rate before and after exercise) and discuss how coding is used to document health data.
-
Social Studies Discussion:
Jordan will explore how different cultures use coding in healthcare and create a presentation on their findings. This will promote understanding of global perspectives in health systems.
Talking Points
- Art: "Art can express complex ideas. How can we visually represent coding systems?"
- English: "Words are powerful. Understanding the vocabulary of coding is essential for clear communication."
- History: "Every system has a story. Who were the key players in developing medical coding?"
- Math: "Numbers tell a story in healthcare. How do we calculate costs and outcomes?"
- Music: "Music can help us remember. What’s a catchy phrase we can use for coding?"
- Physical Education: "Movement helps the mind. How does physical activity relate to our health data?"
- Science: "Science is about inquiry. What questions do we have about health data collection?"
- Social Studies: "Culture shapes healthcare. How do different societies approach medical coding?"
