Objective

By the end of this lesson, Jordan will have a comprehensive understanding of basic electricity concepts, including its practical applications in daily life, while integrating skills in reading, spelling, ASL, home economics, life skills, critical thinking, and logic.

Materials and Prep

  • Pencil and paper for notes and assignments
  • Access to a dictionary or thesaurus for spelling
  • Basic household items (batteries, wires, light bulbs, etc.) for practical experiments
  • ASL resources (videos or flashcards) for learning signs related to electricity
  • Cooking supplies for a simple recipe that requires measuring (to discuss energy use in cooking)
  • Logic puzzles or games for critical thinking practice
  • Access to a safe space for hands-on experiments

Activities

  • Electricity Vocabulary Challenge: Jordan will create a list of electricity-related terms (like circuit, conductor, insulator) and define them. This will enhance vocabulary and spelling skills.

  • Hands-On Experiment: Using batteries and light bulbs, Jordan will create a simple circuit. This will help him understand how electricity flows and the importance of circuits in everyday devices.

  • ASL Learning Session: Jordan will learn and practice American Sign Language (ASL) signs related to electricity, such as "light," "power," and "energy." This will integrate language skills with the topic of electricity.

  • Cooking with Electricity: Jordan will prepare a simple recipe that requires the use of an electric stove or microwave. He will discuss how electricity is used in cooking and the energy consumption involved.

  • Critical Thinking Puzzles: Jordan will solve logic puzzles related to electricity scenarios. For example, figuring out how to fix a circuit that won't turn on. This will promote problem-solving skills.

Talking Points

  • "Electricity powers our world! Can you think of three things in your home that use electricity?"
  • "A circuit is like a race track for electricity. What do you think happens if there's a break in the track?"
  • "Do you know the difference between a conductor and an insulator? Let's find some examples around the house!"
  • "When we cook, we use electricity. How does that change the way we prepare our meals?"
  • "Logic puzzles help us think critically. Why do you think it's important to solve problems in a logical way?"
