Objective

By the end of this lesson, Jordan will have a comprehensive understanding of basic woodworking skills while integrating reading, spelling, ASL, home economics, life skills, critical thinking, logic, and common sense. Jordan will create a simple wood project and reflect on the process through various subjects.

Materials and Prep

  • Wood pieces (small blocks or planks)
  • Wood glue or nails
  • Sandpaper
  • Paint or wood finish (optional)
  • Measuring tape or ruler
  • Pencil for marking
  • Notebook for notes and reflections
  • Access to a dictionary for spelling
  • ASL resources (videos or online dictionary)

Before the lesson, ensure that Jordan understands basic safety rules for working with wood and tools. Discuss the importance of measuring accurately and the significance of planning before starting a project.

Activities

  • Reading and Planning:

Jordan will read a short article or book chapter on woodworking techniques. After reading, Jordan will summarize the key points and write them down in the notebook.

  • Spelling Challenge:

Jordan will create a list of woodworking-related vocabulary words (e.g., saw, drill, grain, etc.) and practice spelling them. Use each word in a sentence related to woodworking.

  • ASL Learning:

Jordan will learn the ASL signs for common woodworking terms. Create flashcards with the word on one side and the ASL sign on the other. Practice daily to reinforce learning.

  • Wood Project Creation:

Jordan will design and create a simple wood project, such as a birdhouse or a small shelf. Encourage creativity in the design process and emphasize the importance of following the plan.

  • Life Skills Reflection:

After completing the project, Jordan will reflect on the skills learned during the process and how they can be applied to everyday life. Write a short essay on the experience.

  • Critical Thinking and Logic:

Jordan will solve a few woodworking-related problems, such as how to fix a mistake in the project or how to improve the design. Discuss the thought process behind each solution.

Talking Points

  • "Why is it important to read instructions before starting a project?"
  • "How does knowing the correct spelling of tools help you communicate better?"
  • "What are some signs in ASL that can help you explain your project to someone who is deaf?"
  • "What steps do you think are necessary for planning a woodworking project?"
  • "How can the skills you learn in woodworking apply to other areas of your life?"
  • "What challenges did you face while working on your project, and how did you overcome them?"
