Objective

By the end of this lesson, Jordan will have a deeper understanding of empathy, including its importance in daily life, how to communicate it through different mediums, and how to apply it in various situations. This unit study will enhance Jordan's reading, spelling, ASL, home economics, life skills, critical thinking, logic, and common sense skills.

Materials and Prep

  • Notebook and pen for writing reflections
  • Access to a dictionary for spelling words
  • ASL resources (videos or online tutorials)
  • Cooking ingredients for a simple recipe
  • Craft supplies (paper, markers, scissors, glue)
  • Access to a quiet space for discussions

Before starting the lesson, ensure that Jordan is familiar with basic ASL signs and has a comfortable space for cooking and crafting. Prepare a simple recipe that can be made together, focusing on teamwork and communication.

Activities

  • Reading & Reflection: Choose a short story or article that highlights empathy. After reading, Jordan will write a reflection on how the characters demonstrated empathy and how it affected the outcome of the story.
  • ASL Communication: Teach Jordan some basic ASL signs related to feelings and empathy. Practice a short conversation using these signs to express how different situations might make someone feel.
  • Cooking Together: Prepare a recipe together, discussing the importance of teamwork and communication in the kitchen. Emphasize how empathy plays a role in understanding each other's needs and preferences.
  • Crafting Empathy Cards: Create cards that express empathy. Jordan can use drawings and words to illustrate how to support friends or family in tough times. These cards can be shared with someone who needs encouragement.
  • Logic Puzzle Discussion: Present Jordan with a logic puzzle that involves a scenario requiring empathy to solve. Discuss how understanding others' feelings can lead to better problem-solving.

  • "Empathy is about understanding and sharing the feelings of others. Why do you think it's important to feel what someone else is feeling?"
  • "How can we show empathy in our daily lives? Can you think of a time when someone showed you empathy?"
  • "In what ways can understanding someone else's feelings help us communicate better?"
  • "What are some non-verbal ways we can express empathy? How can ASL help us in this?"
  • "When cooking together, how do you think empathy plays a role in teamwork? Can you give me an example?"
  • "Creating an empathy card is a great way to show support. What message would you want to send to someone who is feeling down?"
  • "Logic puzzles often require us to think about different perspectives. How can empathy help us solve problems more effectively?"
